Today, the average life expectancy is at a record high of 79 years. As we get older, even the most independent among us may experience physical declines or financial hardship that strips away our independence. Add to that an increase in
geographic mobility of our families, and the result is millions of seniors left behind, hungry and alone. Our Impact
GECAC Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers more than 100,000 free meals each year to seniors in the city of Erie and throughout Erie County.
Meals on Wheels of Erie County, better known as GECAC Meals on Wheels, has been guided by a single goal – to support our senior neighbors to extend their independence and health as they age. GECAC offers free meals paid for by the Pennsylvania State Lottery revenue. Every visit comes with a nutritious meal, a safety check around the house, and an assessment of any changes that might impact future medical needs. This can mean the difference between independent living at home and an unwelcome transfer to a costly long-term care facility.
Daily
Our volunteers deliver meals Monday through Friday anytime between 9:30 a.m. and noon.
Weekend
Two frozen meals will be delivered on Fridays for a total of seven meals per week for those consumers who qualify for them.
Holiday Meals
Frozen meals are delivered on the weekday before a holiday so that our volunteers can be home with their families.
Meals arrive warm. You can save your meal for the evening by refrigerating the container and warming it up in the microwave. Heating instructions are on the container.
